What is a Crush?
A crush is a word used to describe the special feelings you have for someone. This person can be your friend, your classmate, your brother’s or sister’s friend, or even someone whom you do not know personally, like an actor or singer. Crushes can last for a few days, weeks, months or longer.
Why do they call it Puppy Love?
Crushes are sometimes referred to as puppy love because it is an experience which you have when you are young. This may be the first time you are experiencing a crush and it is new to you. So it is like a puppy experiencing many new things in life. When you have special feelings for someone at your age, it can be described as puppy love.
If you have a crush, you may:
- Feel shy or nervous when you are around that person
- Feel both happy and excited when you think about that person
- Find it difficult to talk when you see your crush. Some people may forget what they want to say when they see their crush because they are too nervous
- Find it difficult to concentrate on your studies because you are often thinking about your special someone
- Wonder if the girl or boy you like feels the same way about you
- Wonder if you should tell him or her about how you feel
I have a crush. Am I normal?
It is perfectly normal to have a crush on someone ! Many boys and girls experience having special feelings for someone when growing up. Having a crush can be exciting because you are learning how it feels to like another person! Having a crush can also help you to notice the qualities you like or dislike about a person, and think about the kind of person you want to date when you grow up.
What should I do if I have a Crush?
When you have a crush on someone, you will want to find out more about him or her. You may imagine yourself going out with the person, and spending time talking to him or her. You may also imagine what it will be like if this person is your boyfriend or girlfriend. However, having a boyfriend or girlfriend requires commitments which you may not ready for. Therefore, it is good to just be friends with your crush for now.
It also helps to talk about your feelings with someone. If you feel comfortable, you may want to share about your crush with your friends. You may also wonder if you should tell him or her about how you feel. However, before you decide to do this, do think about the way your crush might react.
Sometimes children get teased about their crushes. So share this with a friend whom you can trust! Similarly, if any of your friends choose to share about their crushes with you, don’t make them feel uncomfortable by teasing them!
If you feel comfortable enough, you can also choose to share about your feelings with a trusted adult, like a parent, teacher, your school counsellor or Tinkle Friend!
What if My Crush Does Not Like Me?
It is a lovely feeling when you find out that your crush likes you too. However, sometimes, that special someone may not feel the same way about you. When this happens, you may feel hurt, disappointed, and sad or rejected. You may feel this way for some time, but do know that you will feel better as time passes. Remember that you are special and it is nobody’s fault if things do not work out the way you will like it to be.
Similarly, if someone has told you that he or she has a crush on you and you do not feel the same way, try to let him or her know in a nice way.
With that, things might not be so straight forward at times. You may be stuck in certain situations which you are unsure of what to do.
Remember that you can always call Tinkle Friend if you need to seek advice or feel like talking to someone about how you feel!
